Ransom Memorial Church was founded in 1975 by Rev. Josias T. Ransom. Rev. Ransom became disappointed with the church he was a member of. He felt that he was not growing spiritually. In 1970, Rev. Ransom went to the pastor and told the pastor that he was leaving the church. The pastor told Rev. Ransom that he had not heard the voice of the Lord correctly and that Rev. Ransom was wrong. Rev. Ransom prayed again and heard the Lord tell him to leave the church he was at.  Rev. Ransom went to the pastor again.  This time, the pastor told Rev. Ransom that he would not succeed at anything he did if he left the church.  Rev. Ransom was very hurt.  Rev. Ransom left the church.  He did not attend another church service until 1972.

In 1972, a friend of Rev. Ransom, Evg. Paul Davis (founder and president of Wounded Spirits), invited Rev. Ransom to a revival.  Rev. Ransom went to the revival.  He only went because he was tired of Evg. Davis asking him to go to the church with him.

Rev. Ransom was greatly blessed at the revival the first few nights. During one of the services, he heard, "Feed my sheep. You will be a shepherd for my sheep."  Rev. Ransom ignored what he had heard and went on his way.

The last night of the revival, the guest evangelist called Rev. Ransom up. The evangelist said to Rev. Ransom, "Feed my sheep. You will be a shepherd for my sheep."  Rev. Ransom went back to his seat.

By 1974, Rev. Ransom still had not followed the instructions that he had received from God.  Evg. Davis began talking to and counseling Rev. Ransom. Evg. Davis saw that Rev. Ransom had been very wounded by his last pastor.  Evg. Davis began to seek the Lord to see how he could help Rev. Ransom.  The Lord gave Evg. Davis a wonderful plan and way of ministering to Rev. Ransom.  (The plan would later blossom into Wounded Spirits Ministry). Rev. Ransom was helped by Evg. Davis' ministry.

In 1975, Rev. Ransom began and founded Ransom Memorial Church. He put the word Memorial in the name of the church because the church would serve as a reminder that God can heal all wounds, natural and spiritual.

During the first 6 months, there were no members, only Rev. Ransom, his wife, Daisy Ransom, and their twin sons, Jordan and Jaridon. On occasion, Evg. Davis would stop by and preach a service.

The first new member came in February of 1976. This person had been wounded by her former church.  She was told by Evg. Davis that Ransom Memorial would be a good place for her to go.  The first member of Ransom Memorial was Nancy Jenkins.  She was a very popular singer and musician. She became the minister of music after a few months. After Nancy became a member, the membership grew a little faster. Nancy was telling everyone that she knew who had been wounded about Ransom Memorial.

There were a lot of people who had been wounded in church and by church people.  As a result of this, Rev. Ransom asked Evg. Davis to set-up classes and seminars to help the new members be healed of past wounds. Evg. Davis agreed. Wounded Spirits Ministry was born. Evg. Davis and Rev. Ransom set-up the ministry so that it would match the doctrine of the church and the pastor. The ministry was a success at Ransom Memorial.

The church grew. By 1995, Ransom Memorial Church had a membership of 150. The ministries of the church were growing and God was moving mightily.

In November of 1995, Rev. Ransom died of a heart attack. Rev. Ransom's death shook up the church. Many people were deeply hurt and angry.  Then assistant pastor, Rev. Rodney Spellman, did his best to hold the church together and to keep them encouraged. Rev. Spellman did his best; only 3 people left the church.  Rev. Spellman was installed as pastor in 1996.  He has continued on with the vision established by Rev. Ransom.

Rev. Spellman set-up a special fund to take care of Sis Daisy Ransom, Rev. Ransom's widow.

Ransom Memorial Church has grown under the leadership of Rev. Spellman.  Sis. Daisy Ransom, Rev. Jaridon Ransom, and LaKeisha Ransom are still members of Ransom Memorial.  Jordan Ransom is the minister of music for Westridge Church.

The church has set-up a dynamic Children's Ministry that is very popular in the city of Yancey.  The choir has also recorded as the guest choir for Nancy Jenkins and Rev. Jaridon Ransom.

Ransom Memorial Church joined the Maddocha Fellowship of Pentecostal Churches in 1996.

Ransom Memorial is still a place where people can come when they have been wounded.
